What is patellofemoral pain?

Patellofemoral pain refers to pain felt behind or around your kneecap (patella).

Patellofemoral pain is due to excessive pressure on your knee cap from poor patella alignment or tracking when the knee moves.

What causes patellofemoral pain syndrome?

  • Tight muscles which effect patella tracking
  • Poor biomechanical control.
  • Weakness of hip muscles and inner quadriceps
  • Poor foot posture.

What are the symptoms of patellofemoral pain syndrome?

  • Sharp pain with activity
  • Dull pain can be felt at night
  • Knee may feel stiff
  • Knee may click or grind
  • Stairs, squatting, kneeling, hopping, running or using stairsare commonly painful.

Treatment

  • Correct biomechanics
  • Releases tight muscles and correct muscle imbalances
  • Strengthen hip and inner quadriceps
  • Taping can help
  • Correct underlying causes.
