What is trochanteric bursitis?
Trochanteric bursitis is inflammation of the bursa (a fluid filled sac) which is located between the tendon and bone. The bursa helps reduce friction between the tendon and bone.
What causes trochanteric bursitis?
Trochanteric bursitis is normally caused by repeated compression of the bursa. The main cause of the compression is due to weakness of the gluteal muscles.
Signs and symptoms
- Lateral (Side of hip) Hip joint pain or tenderness.
- Referred pain down outside of thigh towards knee.
- Pain with sleep particularly lying on the sore side.
- Increased pain with activity ie stairs, running and walking.
Treatment
- Reduce pain- Ice, NSAIDS, rest
- Release tight muscles around hip
- Strengthen gluteal muscles and lumbo-pelvic control
- Address contributing factors- orthotics
- Activity modification.
